Created by choreographer Ishmael Houston-Jones, composer Chris Cochrane and writer Dennis Cooper, the piece is a brutal and vulnerable exploration of gay sexuality and the horrors that AIDS inflicted on the artistic community. A South African choreographer, Masilo reveals the violence behind the beloved plot. For <em>Center Aisle Blues <\/em>Gutierrez spent weeks getting to know the staff and exploring his way through the store, finding its nooks and crannies. His vocabulary ranged from elegant, linear movement to elaborate ways of connecting to the aisles. She completely owned the idea of dancing in the middle of a supermarket. But have we ever seen him dancing in shorts and high heels? At the American Tap Dance Foundation&#8217;s Rhythm in Motion showcase, Caleb Teicher blew us away with his <em>Great Heights <\/em> genre-bending solo <em>. <\/em> His legs thumped, stomped, and pounded the floor before he pounced on a stool. He then kicked and kicked up a storm in that elevated position.<\/p>\n<h3 data-fontsize=\"22\" data-lineheight=\"31\">6 &#8211; More creative use of accessories: Mean Girls<\/h3>\n<div class=\"fusion-video fusion-youtube fusion-aligncenter\">\n<div class=\"video-shortcode\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Who knew plastic lunch trays could stop a Broadway show? In <em>Mean Girls <\/em>Casey Nicholaw swaps pads for pans to create percussive effects similar to classic song and dance numbers. From his perfect attitude walk (supported only by ribbons) to his sharp footwork and even sharper comic timing, Gilbert&#8217;s performance was as much a technical dream as it was an artistic dream.<\/p>\n<h3 data-fontsize=\"22\" data-lineheight=\"31\">8 &#8211; Mayor Boost to Ballet: San Francisco Ballet&#8217;s Unbound Festival<\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div class=\"ytp-chrome-top ytp-show-cards-title\" data-layer=\"1\">\n<div class=\"ytp-title\">\n<div class=\"ytp-title-text\">\n<p><a class=\"ytp-title-link yt-uix-sessionlink\" tabindex=\"0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=_fFGbXtbzpI\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-sessionlink=\"feature=player-title\">San Francisco Ballet&#8217;s Unbound: A Festival of New Works<\/a><\/p>\n<div class=\"ytp-title-subtext\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ytp-chrome-top-buttons\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ytp-cued-thumbnail-overlay\" data-layer=\"4\"><\/div>\n<p>With 12 world premieres by artists such as Justin Peck, Annabelle Lopez Ochoa and Alonzo King, San Francisco Ballet&#8217;s Unbound Festival was a 17-day heterogeneous mix of dance. But it was so much more: principal dancers revealed new aspects of their artistry, the roles portrayed transformed corps members into stars overnight, and wildly imaginative works like <em>Arthur Pita&#8217;s <\/em>Bj\u00f6rk Ballet got everyone talking. At each intermission, the lobby of War Memorial Opera House echoed with impassioned debates about what worked, what didn&#8217;t, and what was unlike anything seen before on the SFB stage. But during her debut in Alexei Ratmansky&#8217;s fantastic comic <em>Namouna, a Grand Divertissement <\/em>the principal of the New York City Ballet imbued her with a dancing and lack of inhibition that seemed new. &#8220;I tailored the role for him, raised the passions and performed the battles so he felt he could be great on stage,&#8221; Ratmansky says of their collaboration. That push seems to have unleashed something in her. Channeling his already distinctive personality through the eccentricities of the role, he was more present than ever.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3 data-fontsize=\"22\" data-lineheight=\"31\">10 &#8211; Most Promising Debut Season: Terminus Modern Ballet Theatre<\/h3>\n<p>In four world premiere works, Terminus Modern Ballet Theatre&#8217;s inaugural season in Atlanta offered dance that was technically pristine and highly entertaining. Facing torrential spring rains, Tara Lee <em>The Vertical <\/em>closed out the outdoor season with a playful and candid look at aging. Whether in the community or in a traditional theater, the company&#8217;s five founding members, all former Atlanta Ballet dancers, have proven they know what it takes to present a memorable show.<\/p>\n<h3 data-fontsize=\"22\" data-lineheight=\"31\">11 &#8211; Most inventive dance game: The beast in the jungle.<\/h3>\n<div class=\"fusion-video fusion-youtube fusion-aligncenter\">\n<div class=\"video-shortcode\">Susan Stroman could have spent the rest of her days after <em>The Producers <\/em>simply directing and choreographing in a similar, stupendously successful vein. But she went off Broadway, and this year she outdid herself with <em>The Beast in the Jungle <\/em>at the Vineyard Theatre. Enlisting the extraordinary talents of Irina Dvorovenko and Tony Yazbeck, using multiple dance vocabularies, and going to a 1903 Henry James story to gather material, she put together what she calls a &#8220;dance play,&#8221; and it was utterly riveting.
